I just want to be a local nurse helping out people at local hospitals.

You can be an LPN/LVN, an RN with and associates degree, an RN with a bachelor’s degree, and RN with a Masters, etc. You can work as a school nurse, a hospital floor nurse, a charge nurse in a hospital, etc. You can work in dialysis clinics, doctor’s offices, corporate offices, etc. You can work in a clinic, at a nursing home, at arehab facility, a psych clinic, etc. You could also do home health where you visit clients in their homes.
In short, there are countless opportunitues.
Your study path depends on your goals. Most large hospitals only hire BSN trained RNs (at least the larger ones in the medical centers).
Go to your local community college and speak to a counselor. Go to an information session at your local nursing schools. Talk to nurses in your community.
